Every popular science fiction series I can think of has a signature cool technology ... except two. Star Wars has lightsabers, Doctor Who has the TARDIS, Stargate SG-1 has the Stargate, Battlestar Galactica (both versions) has the frakking Cylons, and so forth.

If I had to define a "cool" technology, it's something integral to the series that makes it memorable. It's the thing people write fan fiction about, besides the characters' sex lives. Generally it's the first thing that pops into your head when you think of the series. As another example, Lost in Space (the TV series) had the Robot: it's in every episode (or nearly so), it's spawned at least one meme ("Danger Will Robinson!"), and it's the first thing I think of besides cheap costumes and Dr. Smith's whining.

However, I can't think of just one for Star Trek, so I've listed some major candidates in the poll. Feel free to suggest others in the thread, or dispute my candidates for other series.

Also, I can't think of even one for Babylon 5, unless you count telepathy, Vorlon encounter suits, the Shadows' invisibility, or various space ships. B5 wasn't really a technological show.

I would go for the food replicators. They are a wonderful example of how different the SW world is from reality.
