Hello SUPERS! fans,

At the behest of Simon, I wanted to let you know about the products I am working on for SUPERS! I am the artist that did all the art for the book (which seems to get a 50/50 from reviewers) and I am currently creating character books based on The Public Domain Super Hero Wiki site.

These heroes are, as far as the Wiki can tell, in the public domain and free to use. Hence the reason I am using them for the very versatile SUPERS! rpg system. I can't tell you how much fun it is to create characters with the game, and how much fun it has been to draw the heroes as well.

So far I have released 4 issues and hope to do many more with 5 being released this week.

I am also releasing adventures for use in your personal games. The first two feature a previously released Public Domain character, and a new one of my own creation. Starting with the third adventure there will be two new characters in each adventure, hopefully increasing the value of the product.

All of my products are priced at the very economical 0.99 and you can pick up any (or all) of these at RPGnow (http://www.rpgnow.com/index.php?manufacturers_id=3926)

I will update this thread with new releases, and feel free to let me know what you think of the products, and of any other places I can promote both my own Supers! products and SUPERS! itself

Thanks
Darrel

I checked out your products over at rpgnow, cool stuff!

For the 50% that you say didn't care for your Supers!Plus illustration, I highly encourage them to look at your work on the books at rpgnow. From what I saw they're much cleaner/better proportioned than your work on Supers! Not a knock on the Supers! illustrations by any means, I think they fit the book well.

Anywho, glad to see you on the (growing?) Supers! board.

Howdy Darrel!

Good to see you here! Your public domain stuff looks fun, and what a great concept to publish those characters.

As for your art in SUPERS!, it might not grab folk with more modern sensibilities, but I enjoy it for its retro coolness. SO - thanks for all your work for SUPERS! and I look forward to your stuff in the future.

As for supporting SUPERS! - I've taken to posting over at rpg.net - at LEAST one post per day. My goal is to keep this gem of a game in active discussion in the hopes that more people will tune in and pay attention. It would be great to have you participate - even if only to announce new products as they come up.

Best,

Dragonfly

If it is 50/50 (which I doubt) the other 50 are wrong.

First Up - Simon, thanks for allowing me (and others) to use Supers! for our own products. I can't wait to see what others will do, and also thanks for the kind words. I was kind of joking about the 50/50

Dustland - you noticed! cool, it wasn't just in my mind. I do feel like my illustrative abilities have grown since the publication of Supers! and I am glad others can see it. However, i will note that I am going back to a more "cartoony" look as it fits who I want to be as an artist better. I felt like PDS #4 supers were a little stiff and lifeless and I find that when I approach the art with a bit less "realism" they have more energy and life in them (if that makes any sense). Plus that style is just more fun to draw.

Dragonfly - thanks for posting about Supers! we don't have the "names" behind our little supers game, but I for one think it is superior in everyway to its two or three other supers lite competitors. Also thanks for the words about my illustrations I am glad you enjoyed them and even though I didn't know it at the time, I drew them for you!

look for Public Domain Supers! #5 Sunday or Monday!! (Ill post here too)

Darrell,

Let me chime in with others about enjoying Public Domain Supers. I'm a fan of Golden Age heroes, so seeing them released for a game is really cool.

I did notice in the clip art packs that some characters are missing color pieces (Black Cobra, Kid Cobra, Captain battle, Bulletman/Bulletgirl and Black Kitten are the ones I noticed most), and was wondering why that was? You include B&W copies of them, but not color ones.

Definitely looking forward to seeing more though, so keep up the good work!

Sure thing, Dustland! This will take you to the original post by CG7: http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?582025-SUPERS!-Stuff-for-folks-to-use!

I'm aiming to keep it on the first page of the Tabletop Roleplaying Open at all times. It's generating some interest too, methinks. I don't know if it's NEW interest, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Best,

Dragonfly

I can add them to my list

I wasn't really serious. Many of Fletcher Hanks's characters had unlimited powers, which they invariably used for brutal and grotesque punishments for sometimes petty crimes. Granted, Leopard Women of Venus for QAGS wrote up both Stardust (http://pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Stardust) and Fantomah (http://pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Fantomah), although I can't imagine actually rolling dice for either one. They're pretty much Dei Ex Machina with a side order of natural disaster.

well for one, how about Eagle's sidekick Buddy?

Others: The Australian Cat-Man, Airmale, Airman, Eaglet (American Eagle's sidekick), Atlas (I.W. Publishing), Owl (Dell)/Owlgirl, & Black Owl

Villains: Black Puma, Baron Doom. Captain Nippon

urbwar - When I first released some of the free supers! clip art, I decided to just release the black and white versions, but as I progressed in the line I decided to give away both color and b&w. Finally i was tired of the "work" required to split them up so from now on you will get all 10 supers, both color and b&w for only 0.99. Basically what you paid to get them all any way before, now just one package.

AND on that note!! PUBLIC DOMAIN SUPERS! 6 is out,

I know it's likely a pain in the butt, but it would be nice if you updated those older clip art collections with the color pieces.

I also noticed that one of the B&W ones is labeled "Black Kitten copy", but it's actually Black Cat again. You might want to correct that as well.

Added the new one to my wish list, and will likely get it either tonight or over the weekend.

urbwar - look for those additions within the next week or two, as well as the corrections.

For everyone else, the clip art collection from PDS #6 is out, and PDS #7 should be out by Weds or Thursday.

Pick up the Clip Art Collection #10 here (http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=100356)

---------- Post added at 10:10 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:10 AM ----------

Also, is there ANY interest in doing a product similar to what BASH and ICONS is doing where people submit their own supers for publication in a Character Folio kind of collection?

Personally, I don't see any interest in that kind of operation. I hadn't subscribed to Icons and Bash's project neither.

I think you're missing out on the BASH one. Unlike the one for ICONS, it has story seeds for each character interacting with every other character in the release. So you get a ton of adventure ideas you can run with to use the characters. The ICONS Hero Packs don't do that at all

novaexpress
03-13-2012, 08:29 AM
Yeah, surely. I followed the posts on the BASH forum at the beginning of the project's development.
But I usually don't use characters created by others. Actually, I don't use a lot of super-villains as enemies. My current scenario mixes Maya gods, nature gone crazy (as in the excellent present DC's Animal Man and Swamp Thing ongoings) and monsters ala Hellraiser. Not too much space for capes and masks. :-)

Just got it. I see you used the image of Sceptre from the file, not the one you said would include his namesake device :(

Btw, while going through the clip art, i saw one for Inferno, but I don't recall seeing him in any of the PDS packs. Is he like a bonus character?

So, any ideas on who will be in the next one besides Brain Master?

Also, did you see the post on rpg.net about Thrilling Golden Age Action for ICONS? Dan Houser commented that your Public Domain Supers line was one of the inspirations for that.

I didn't see Flare or Mummy on the Wiki, but I have something I need to send your way that will likely be a big help with future releases. I'll pm you about it, ok?

Have you considered experimenting with inks combined with this style? I think it could be a very cool look imo. Looking good regardless!

I am glad you asked, because it helped me (along with a couple of other events) get a grip on what I am trying to accomplish art wise. So here is a long winded explanation/discussion of your question.

1) I started teaching art at an afterschool club, and so it has forced me to reexplore different mediums (in particular pencils and pastels). In doing so I gave some demos of the medium. In about 10 minutes I would come up with something like this:

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h245/lerraderellim/facepastel.jpg

The kids were very nice and expressed admiration, but almost always asked "Why do you always draw people." To which I would reply "I love comic books, so that is what I know how to draw really well". (Frankly I was surprised at the above because I have not used pastels in like 20 years, so it gave me the much needed confidence boost in the "fine" arts technique.)

2) Lately I have noticed (partly because I am using something other than inks) that I really enjoy the "texture" traditionally associated with "fine art" (ie water colors, pencils, and pastels) And I noticed that any comics that I have been interested in for the past 10 years have this component (here i am thinking of Alex Ross, and others) Who have used traditional "fine" art mediums. In fact I was not able to articulate it, but I wanted to combine superheroes and "fine art" techniques.

3) Literally yesterday I found a copy of "Batman Death by Design" in which I was able to finally see what you could do with "fine art" techniques in a comic book. This Graphic Novel is drawn entirely in pencil with some minor coloring via Photoshop. Now what I like about the art is that it is "finished" it is not a few scratches, but the artist "inked" the whole comic with a pencil. It is gorgeous and provides a "texture" and "solidity" that I have always felt ink and bright colors cannot do.

I guess that is all to say that I will be exploring more "fine" art techniques in future supplements as 1) I like them 2) I think they are more appropriate to the time period (1920s/30s/40s) 3) I like the "fine" art techniques used on a "cartoon" concept like comic books, I think they give it the look and feel of "real".

Hope that all makes sense.

Cool D, thanks for sharing. I'll have to check out Batman Death by Design, that is freaking awesome! Very '30s Noire look to it, so I see what you mean. I'm a huge fan of using pastels on black, coarse paper, just don't take the time to practice it, but I love the texture of the medium.

I may play around with the watercolored cowgirl image later and satisfy my curiosity on the inking.

I'd love to see someone else ink my stuff, that would be an honor.

I am working slowly, I think I am going to go to a "newspaper" format for the next issues, and include "action shots" instead of static poses for the characters. Whaddya think?

Yep. The action shots are a good idea.
It'll make the art more vivid.

Looks really cool, Darrel! Very classic look! Reminds me of some of the sketches in the first "superman" story ever, "The Reign of the Super-Man" by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

Cheers!

Man I love this latest piece too! Your highlighting and shadowing makes me jealous; it's the little things, like the highlighting of the hair, that makes me think this is really a technique that you do uber-well (is that a word?) Not discounting your other work, but I REALLY hope to see some more pieces like this.

+1 vote for more action poses!

I'm doing a free promo of Batman Superman and Wonderwoman to show case the new format for Public Domain Supers, hopeful the fact that it is free won't get me a lawyer letter from DC.

I wouldn't rely on that...

Yah, just because there's no profit to be directly made from the images, they still have a legal right to protect how their trademarked images are used because of branding and what not.

I guess I am the first one to get this! Let me say that I love the background you use on each page; it looks like old comics whose pages have turned slightly brown. It adds something to it. The art is really good too; i like how you went with B&W over color this time, though I hope when you do the clip art pack, there will be color versions as well. And you did Ace of Blades! I was reading up on her not 2 days ago! She is one of the more interesting Nazi villains from the Golden Age. She's almost the opposite of Baroness Blood; it would be interesting to have the two of them work together. Hmm... maybe an idea for one of your short adventure books?
