View Full Version : Classic D&D sandbox

I will be starting a regular sandbox D&D game in Beaverton. We will probably play regularly on Saturdays, but with an open table and episodic campaign style, so you don't have to commit to a weekly schedule.

GENRE: Darkish weird fantasy, like a cross between an Erol Otus sketch
and Lamentations of the Flame Princess. I also really like the flavor
and attitude in the DCC RPG beta. Characters are adventurers, not big
damn heroes. Life is cheap and the universe is uncaring if not hostile.

Focus on roleplay and having fun no matter what your level; if you die
you can always roll up a new character and jump right back in.
Teens will be playing, so we'll keep it somewhere between PG-13 and R
rated. Lots of demons, not so much sex.

Adventure in megadungeon and wilderness. I'm not big on politics so
don't expect much of that. Not monty haul but plenty of magic. A points
of light style setting.

POWER/BALANCE: Most NPCs are normal men, and at 4th level you are a
notable hero. The focus will be on levels 1-9, and beyond 9th level you
should be considering building a castle and maybe retiring. Nominal max
level is 14th. Will be adding option is to emphasize and enhance this
general theme.

SANDBOX: I'd like to do something like the West Marches, but not sure
how closely I'll hew to that specific model. The game will have an open
table: we play with whoever shows up and try to keep it episodic.
Hopefully this mitigates real-life scheduling issues.

RULES: B/X as a base, but with healthy infusions of OD&D, AD&D, LOTFP,
etc. I like a lot of the ideas in the DCC RPG beta so plan to
incorporate some of that stuff into the D&D framework, especially the
Fighter "deeds". If you don't have the B/X rules no problem, I have

SOME INSPIRATIONS: Erol Otus, Sutherland, Trampier, Willingham, Dee;
George Macdonald, Lovecraft's dreamquest, Moorcock, Clark Ashton Smith,
Tolkien; Lamentations of the Flame Princess, Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG,
Elegia RPG.

I am interested, what is the rough location, and would you provide the hand books to create a character?

Hi. Game is in southern Beaverton just off Scholls Ferry road. Yes I can provide rulebooks.
