Anyone still avidly play 1st edition? I have owned the books for years and years and use to play it but have not in a while and I miss the simple rules. Anyone have any links to conversions or ways to update it some? Added rules? ect...

I have to ask - are you talking OD&D - the three/six original little books, or are you talking AD&D with the DMG with the efreet on the cover? There's a world of difference.

I had played 1e AD&d game a few months back. Not so simple rules as you might think. Combat, as written, is not so friendly IMO. The ORSIC is little more friendly. And with my ability scores, all I was good at was playing a half-orc fighter/thief who happen to fall under in most every combat LOL.

You can always try Castles and Crusades. A friend of mine (he plays the 2e version) describes it as all the good of 1e w/o the bad. I don't know, for I have never played it. Something to check out: http://www.trolllord.com/cnc/index.html

Ah, i do miss the low ability scores of yesteryears gaming. If we had one stat of 14, we were happy.

Something else to check out: Rules Cyclopedia: http://www.retroroleplaying.com/cdnd/cdnd-rulescyclopedia.php

I believe their are free pdfs found online. Thoth leaves his two coppers at the bar.

thanks for all the replies.

I was meaning 1st ed Ad&d. It has been quite a few years since I played and I was looking for a good simple ruleset and I seem to remember it being quick hack n' slash play.

In addition to OSRIC (http://www.knights-n-knaves.com/osric/):

Swords & Wizardry (http://www.swordsandwizardry.com/) (oD&D clone)
Labyrinth Lord (http://www.goblinoidgames.com/labyrinthlord.html) (B/X clone)
Dark Dungeons (http://darkdungeonsblog.wordpress.com/) (RC - I think - clone).

There's also Old School Hack (http://www.oldschoolhack.net/), which might fit the simple rules, hack & slash gameplay criteria. (Unlike the previous games, Old School Hack isn't a retroclone, though it is roughly descended from the old Basic Red Box. Just not in rules fidelity :P)
