I sometimes forget that a good DM provides the compass but lets the players choose the direction...

After getting "screwed" early in my GMing career by players that went "off-script", I have found that I perform MUCH better under the pressure of less initial planning. I set up the scenario and the static time-line (i.e. - no matter what else happens, a guard will walk by this location at this time) and then let the group loose. Sometimes it works out like I thought it might (or as the NPC's planned) - and sometimes the players lose their minds and do things that I (and the NPC's) would never expect. Hey, the building has three doors and ten windows - as well as a sewer access - and the players decide to blow a hole through the wall - EEEK!

My most memorable gaming moments was when I made a rough outline, stated the NPC's/enemies, and then winged it.

Good times!!
