View Full Version : Quick caster question (3.5 edition)

So my level 6 human sorcerer has 22 CHA (my DM was incredibly kind to me). He knows spells up to level 3.
Well, if a caster has 22 in their casting stat they get a bonus 2 spells for lvl 1 and 2 spells, as well as a bonus 1 spell for levels 3 through 6.
Now take fireball for example. It's a level 3 spell. What if I want to use a feat (explosive spell) that requires that I use a spell slot for spells that are 2 levels higher than the original spell (so level 5).
Here's my question: Can I cast an explosive fireball at level 6 because I have a bonus cast for my high CHA?

No, in general, you must have Access to that level of spell before you can prepare a spell of that level. You have bonus spells, once you reach that point, but technically no bonus spells until you reach the appropriate level.

Agreed. You don't gain access to the bonus spells until you can cast spells of that level.

Rats. :/ It was worth a shot.
Though really, I can't complain. I'm already dealing the most damage... both to individual baddies as well as to the enemies collectively.

Sorcerers in 3.5 are pretty awesome damage dealers :)

yeah Magic Users have the easiest time putting out the higher damage as their damage is more innate to the class Vs the melee fighters who need to spend lots of money to build up great weapons to dole out lots of damage.

It all has to do with spell slots. In order to use the explosive spell on a 3rd level spell, you need to us a fifth level slot. At 6th level you can only apply the meta magic feat to 0-level or 1st level spells (one taking a 2nd level slot, the other a 3rd level slot). You could apply it to a burning hands spell at that level.

there are a number of methods to reduce metamagic cost....
