Setting magic item prices is always a toughie. Personally though, I've never liked the whole run-down-to-the-magic-shop availability of magic items, even though I run my games in the relatively magic-heavy Forgotten Realms. I'd pose one more solution to the conundrum of magic item pricing: get rid of magic shops, and make selling magic items for what amounts to a king's ransom very difficult. Realistically, it would have to be, unless wealthy adventurers are the rule and not the exception. The more pressing question should really be, are the item's powers well-balanced for the party and your game?
