Had this idea a few hours ago fitting a warforged or other similarly construct or manufactured race. I know Warforged aren't the most popular race ever, but I like them and they fit into just about any campaign that's had a war with a slightly advanced civilization, or a heavy construct using alliance. Here's my idea that I won't get to use for a while so if anyone has any use for it feel free to take it.

"Forty too" is about the unluckiest thing this Warforged has ever heard. Having been created with a very minor defunct causing him to feel twitchy and compulsive, "Forty-Too" was selected to be scrapped for raw materials and made into probably a sword or set of breastplate. His designated number was AE-040, and when they listed the numbers of defunct Warforged to be scrapped his number was called last...

"AE-Twelve, AE-Eighteen, AE-Twenty-Four, AE-Thirty, and Thirty-Six."
"That's only five, the ledger said six to be decomissioned."
"Oh sorry, and Forty too."

The scrappers had mistakenly thought "Forty too" for "Forty-two" and scrapped the perfectly functional Warforged instead. AE-040 played it off as though he didn't know and adopted AE-042 as his number. Even representing it all through the last war. When he gained his freedom he took a moment to shove in the faces of his superiors their mistake, and point out the number of Warforged who could be living independant now had their rules on a perfect war machine not been so strict. Rather than go public, the creaters granted "Forty-Too" with a good home and enough gear to explore, as was his life dream.

I would suggest a compulsive gambler trait as well. I could also see it/him as at least making platitudes of worshiping a deity of luck/fortune. He may not necessarily BELIEVE it the deity - he's just hedging his bets in case the deity actually does exist and has some powers.

This is a WAY neat concept!

Thank you!

Good idea too. Maybe attracted to number games which include 40 or 42 as options. And like I said feel free to take the idea for whatever NPC or character or whatever you want.

WAIT!!!

What about throwing in a concept like the movie "23"? He may try to see 40 or 42 in everything he sees. That might make for one heck of a campaign/adventure hook!!!

Haha maybe the opposite effect of 23 with 42 being a good sign. Like he sees 42nd street in Sharn somewhere and decides to head down that road, or a building which has 42 in the address or adds up to 42. It would be a good way to stumble into a secret in a game like D&D.

Great ideas flowing here! Also, since he's an explorer type, he could set up a sort of archaeologist/item retrieval business at the address.
