Another Sunday-funday quote brought to you by Arch Lich Thoth-Amon, your friendly (don't you believe it), Underworld, epic-level Sorcerer/Psion.

Quotes that resonate.

I thought it would be fun for everyone to list quotes, famous or your own personal ones, that resonate with you at this very moment... of just a quote you liked and wanted to share. Be sure to participate as often as you like, oh... and... be sure, whenever possible, to list the author, including yourself, when applicable. :D

Here's mine for this moment:

To be wronged is nothing unless you continue to remember it. -Confucius

May of been mentioned already, and if so, it is worth rementioning the old saying, ‘Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.’

Earlier, and still current, with the verb deceive.

For Who deceives me once, God forgive him; if twice, God forgive him; but if thrice, God forgive him, but not me, because I could not beware.
[1611 Tarlton's Jests (1844) 11]

The Italians having a Proverb, He that deceives me Once, it's his Fault; but Twice it is my fault.
[1650 A. Welldon Secret History of King James I (1690) 88]

He that deceives me once, it is his faul[t]; if twice, it is mine.
[1659 N. R. Proverbs English, French, Dutch, Italian & Spanish 54]

The important thing in dealing with the Japanese is not to believe everything you hear. Or, as the saying goes: Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
[1980 Forbes 17 Mar. 69]

‘Did you give him any?’ ‘No. I wouldn't be so daft. You know that old saying? He that deceives me once, shame fall him; if he deceives me twice, shame fall me.’
[2002 P. Lovesey Diamond Dust xxx. 297]

Nice thread! Some of my favorite quotes (for one reason or another) are:

"Even a broken clock is right twice a day." - Unknown
"There is nothing to fear but fear itself." - FDR
"Wow... Sometimes 'fake life' is so much better than real life..." - a memorable statement by a friend and gamer in my group who had been in the midst of a long-running bad luck spell in 'real life' but whose character was experiencing a very unexpected and long-running spell of extrordinary good luck in 'fake life'- aka the game! LOL. I still love that one!
"F*** the F***ing F***ers!" - Roy Boehm, Navy SeAL, as quoted by Richard NMN Marcincko in the various Rogue Warrior novels.
"...How 'bout boom boom kitty f***?" - "Jay" from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

I will definitely be revisiting this thread! Thanks!

The old idea that words possess magical powers is false; but its falsity is the distortion of a very important truth. Words do have a magical effect -- but not in the way that magicians supposed, and not on the objects they were trying to influence. Words are magical in the way they affect the minds of those who use them. "A mere matter of words," we say contemptuously, forgetting that words have power to mould men's thinking, to canalize their feeling, to direct their willing and acting. Conduct and character are largely determined by the nature of the words we currently use to discuss ourselves and the world around us.

"To knot a sentence up properly, it has to be thought out carefully, and revised. New phrases have to be put in; sudden changes of subject must be introducted; verbs must be shifted to unsuspected localities; short words must be excised with ruthless hand; archaisms must be sprinkled like sugar-plums upon the concoction; the fatal human tendency to say things straightforwardly must be detected and defeated by adroit reversals; and, if a glimmer of meaning yet remain under close scrutiny, it must be removed by replacing all the principal verbs by paraphrases in some dead language." --Aleister Crowley (Moonchild)

It's a movie quote.

ADDENDUM: Reader Andrew Patrick informs us: "With regard to the quote from Genghis Khan, the 'slay your enemies?plunder?etc.', was not actually said by Genghis Khan. After he had been traveling around, conquering various peoples and subjugating them for many years, Genghis looked at his three sons and asked them what was best in life. One of his sons replied with the aforementioned quote. Genghis told him that he was wrong, that what was best was riding in the open steppe, with the wind in your hair and a falcon on your wrist (which, ironically, is the opposite of the way it was depicted in Conan, not that Conan is a source of historical knowledge!). Apparently, Genghis was missing the good old days before he set about creating his Empire."

Okay, pnpg contest/challenge:
Conan the Barbarian and Genghis Khan

Military quote site (http://www.military-quotes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1992) gives Genghis' words as

"The greatest happiness is to vanquish your enemies, to chase them before you, to rob them of their wealth, to see those dear to them bathed in tears, to clasp to your bosom their wives and daughters."
Reel.com gives the Conan wording as: (http://www.reel.com/movie.asp?MID=198&PID=10084040&Tab=reviews&CID=18)

"Conan, what is best in life?"
"Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of their women."
Secrets of Conan the Barbarian (http://www.barbariankeep.com/ctbsecrets.html). Author argues the famous line comes from Lamb's novelization Genghis Khan: The Emperor of All Men..

""Nay," responded the Kahn, "to crush your enemies, to see them fall at your feet — to take their horses and goods and hear the lamentation of their women. That is best."

Is the question solved? Eternal kudos here if you can answer me:
What is the source for the Genghis Khan quotation?
Does any history or novelization of Geghis Khan's life have wording that is closer to the Conan version?

Gutenberg's gift to civilization was that no book will ever again be lost. Before him a book may have a dozen copies in the world, after him, thousands. Computer programmers and archivists, the descendants of Gutenberg in process and spirit assure that there will not be thousands, but millions of copies of any given work no matter how great or mundane, loved or hated. No tyrant, be they secular or religious, will ever again control what the people may read. Sometimes a man with too broad a perspective reveals himself as having no real perspective at all. A man who tries too hard to see every side may be a man who is trying to avoid choosing any side. A man who tries too hard to seek a deeper truth may be trying to hide from the truth he already knows. That is not a sign of intellectual sophistication and "great thinking". It is a demonstration of moral degeneracy and cowardice. — Steven Den Beste (http://keithdevens.com/weblog/archive/2004/May/19/Den-Beste.quote)

A society that puts equality -- in the sense of equality of outcome -- ahead of freedom will end up with neither equality nor freedom. The use of force to achieve equality will destroy freedom, and the force, introduced for good purposes, will end up in the hands of people who use it to promote their own interests. — Milton Friedman (Thomas Sowell: A Conflict of Visions, p130) (http://keithdevens.com/weblog/archive/2003/Aug/04/Milton-Friedman-quote)
