What is your flat-footed AC with a Dex of 8?

I would leave it at 10.

You're too unaware to screw up.

On second thought I would keep any minus that is due to size. Big fat target minuses should be retained for big fat targets. So if the Ogre is a -1 dex bonus due to size, they are AC 9 flat footed.

Size modifiers are not dex modifiers. Size modifiers do affect flat footed.

In that case big things are getting whacked twice. AC modifiers for size and size modifiers for Dex.

Yep...look at the spell Enlarge.

When flat-footed, you lose your Dex bonus to AC. A bonus is a positive modifier. An 8 gives you a negative modifier. Therefore, AC 9.

p 179 first says
Sometimes you can’t use your Dexterity bonus (if you
have one). If you can’t react to a blow, you can’t use your
Dexterity bonus to AC. If you don’t have a Dexterity bonus,
your AC does not change.

and further down

Size Modifier: You receive a bonus or penalty to your AC
based on your size. See Table 8–1.

Table 8–1: Size Modifiers
Size Size Modifier
Colossal –8
Gargantuan –4
Huge –2
Large –1
Medium +0
Small +1
Tiny +2
Diminutive +4
Fine +8

Has the errata answered this question?

On page 179 it says you do not apply your "Dexterity bonus"...well 8 Dex does not have a bonus but a -1 penality. So does that mean your flatfooted AC is 9 and not 10?

Yes

With all due respect it just seems silly that you don't apply the bonus, but you do the penalty.

One thing about 3.5 that always gave me pause was remembering when to apply what bonus (re: strength and dex). Dex applies to AC except when negative (or flatfooted), strength always applies to attack and dmg rolls even when negative... I think ...

That's one thing I was disappointed about in the book that it wasn't clearer on. But it makes sense I guess...

Dex applies to AC except when negativeuhm, negative dex applies to AC

It does? Thanks... I don't remember where I got the notion that the minimum base AC for a medium creature was 10, but I appreciate the correction.

Case in point on my confusion. Thanks again liverole!

EDIT: got to go edit a char sheet or two... :)

Dex 8 on a medium size, unequipped creature pre-modifiers would have an ac of 9. Dex measures your agility, a creature with a dex of 10 would be more agile than a creature with a dex of 8, thus able to evade blows more oft.
