View Full Version : 3.5 Monk question

The other day an issue with Deflect Arrows came up. The description in the Player's Handbook suggests that there is a roll involved. But doesn't specify what it is.
The player believes it should automatically succeed. I'm not so sure that's fair.
Is there something I am missing? Any errata on this? And/or how have you all dealt with the feat?

The 3.5 version of the feat does not require a roll; 3.0 had a DC 20(+ weapon's enhancement bonus) Reflex save. The wording, apparently, didn't get updated to reflect this, and still says "attempting..."

No roll. Pretty heavy requirements though: open hand, aware of attack, not flat-footed. And it's only once per round. So the idea is that you can do something cool - block a missile - but not too cool, like block EVERY missile in a round, or block missiles for which you're not ready.

In 3.5 there is no roll because there are lot of requirements just to use it and you can only use it once a round. But everyone can use it not just monks

One could make an Improved feat which allowed a character to block all incoming missiles when choosing the full defense option. It would be even cooler if it were to count for all missiles within range so you could pull of a Hero -Jet Li style arrow blocking extravaganza.

Sweet. Yeah, I didn't think there was a roll, but the wording was vague. It is definitely an awesome ability even with the restrictions. When I DM it, I give it an "Oh crap" factor. I.e. the opponent who levels a crossbow at the monk, and fires, only to see his bolt batted out of the air thinks twice about his position in the fight for sure.

see "exceptional deflection", and "infinite deflection", epic level handbook; "improved deflection", ghostwalk; and if eberron, "mark of deflection", dragonmarked.

Ahhhh...I love short cuts

the latter two may still prove of use, more the former than the latter.

I don't know the latter works just as well as the former for me too.
