True, fantasy gambling isn't only for rogues...but aren't they the most likely to participate? Plus, I expect many gambling opportunities are sponsored by rogues.

Have you done any gambling in-game? How did your GM simulate it? What's your favorite game?

I'm a Three-Dragon-Ante fanatic, but it's pretty complicated to introduce. I imagine there are much simpler dice-based games to be playing either in the Royal Casino, or in the back of the tavern.

Thanks for the tip, their's a rogue in the game I DM, and he's a noob. This is the perfect thing to tie with his character bio for some roleplaying.

Too bad I don't see 3.5 Paladin's gambling.

A god with the Luck Domain might require his paladins to gamble though his stakes could be for the freedom of slaves and other wagers.

I think that's a great idea. I've made a few games up using real cards of course. Players with 'gamble' as a skill get extra cards based on their skill rolls.

True. But a DM/Players can create any Gods they want. ;)

The dealer lays down cards from the deck (numbered 1-12). The player makes a bet that he'll hit 13 before 5 rounds have gone by. Totals over 13 roll back to zero. The house pays 5 to 1 odds on the first round, 4 to 1 on the second, 3 to 1 on the third, etc, until the player loses or the house pays.

(DM rolls a d12 for card results.)

I figure this has a chance for opposed side bets with other gamblers (odd/even), and if it ends up being broken, well, that's when the house thugs show up to rough up the character for cheating :)

dice game called in between you roll 3 six sided dice till you get a a pair and the third is a number example you roll 3,3,4 your point is is 4 and the others must beat it by rolling a pair and a 5 or 6.

The player rolling the die is the bank and covers the bets that he has funds for. He rolls and sets the point. If you roll a pair and one you lose. If you roll a pair and a six you win. Three of a kind is a pair and a number. If You wish to have perhaps a gambling skill add another dice to the players hand. This may take awhile to play out.

I figured a simplified version of craps is suitable for my game. I'll make things more complicated after the newbs are better acclimated.

I gave the subject a long and thoughtful thought when I was fixing the skills chapter. It quickly became apparent that I could write a chapter on how to simulate various games with dice.

I finally came to the conclusion that there are two kinds of games. Fixed odds and opposed roll. Unless there are circumstances that require more I'll stick with that.

Gaming: (WIS Trained only)
The character is skilled in playing so called "games of chance".
Check: The check is made against a fixed "dealer" DC or as an opposed check for games played against other gamblers and not the house. Pure chance games (dice, roulette) are harder to beat than games of cards that have a degree of player skill. A character gets only half their total bonus in gaming against "random games"

Dealer Games 17
Opposed Games Opposed roll.

Success means you have won the agreed on amount of money usually double the sum bet. Failure means you have lost the money.
Action: Anything from a standard action to a full minute.
Try Again: Done is done, one can always play another game.
Synergy: A character with 5 or more ranks in Bluff gains a +2 on gaming attempts against an opposed roll.
A Character with 5 or more ranks in Gaming gains a +2 in any Bluff attempt.
Untrained: An untrained gaming attempt is a straight roll without even a Wisdom bonus.
Note: There are hundreds of games of chance. It would require an entire chapter on gambling to do them any justice. Unless you choose to write such a chapter the above will do.

The City of Brass boxed set (out-of-print & very expensive) from Necromancer games has a lot of information on gambling primarily written for 3.5 system.

Gotta be careful with gambling though. Tends to get addictive. You could turn your RPG into a GG.

Yaaa this was very very very risky game we betted in gold on what card we were going to get in the deck of many things but i got lucky I got 10K xp while my partners character talloes died lol. I laughed then i got punched in the arm.
