View Full Version : Iron Kingdoms: Full Metal Fantasy Craft
08-12-2009, 12:12 AM
Crafty Games (the guys that made Spycraft) has finally released their fantasy ruleset called Fantasy Craft. This, naturally, made me giggle like a child at Christmas and then start tearing through the book. It's all very d20 based with a lot of changes and tweaks and what not, and after going through it I think it can handle the Iron Kingdoms splendidly.
What I'm wondering is whether or not there is any interest here at the boards for the Witchfire Trilogy through the eyes of Fantasy Craft characters. You can either post to here or PM or however you want to show your interest, but I'd definitely like to take my new book out for a spin.

I just posted a review on this game:
If you're serious, I'd love to take my book out for a spin as well, though I'm not familiar with Witchfire Trilogy.

So, a whole bunch of nonsense I typed up the other night is gone. Here's what you need to know.
The Setting: The Iron Kingdoms
A lavishly and thoroughly developed setting by Privateer Press, also known for their Warmachine line. Political intrigue, war-torn nations, traditional fantasy elements (elves, dwarves, magic, and goblins, oh my!), with a little early black powder firearms and massive combat monsters called 'warjacks' (see above picture, I think you can pick it out). I've included an attachment that is a simple and quick little primer or "Player's Handbook" for anyone interested in the story and background of the realm. The setting lends itself to plenty of opportunities for hack-and-slash, but also some cloak & dagger elements that I hope to exploit as much as I possibly can as well.
The System: Fantasy Craft
They took the old d20 dog and taught it some new tricks. Because the system is new and the pdf has a price tag that seems rough (I think it's worth every penny, but I'm a sucker for Crafty Games products), however, if you are even remotely familiar with d20 (3.0, 3.5, 3.x, 3.PF, 3.etc.), then I feel pretty confident that I can walk you through the process of creating a character. Once you have that all filled out, the rest you can learn as we go. Easy, peasy.
The Campaign: The Witchfire Trilogy
I've read through this again and again and have always wanted an opportunity to run it. I think with my new toolbox of goodies, it will make for a great game. If you've played or run it before and you would like to see it run with the new system, you are more than welcome. If we manage to get through that, and everyone's having a good time, I'll be more than happy to keep the game going with my own adventures.
The Characters: That's you!
I'm willing to accept just about any character concept as long as you are not going to actively disrupt the party. Characters with secrets (and even players with secrets from other players) can be a lot of fun, and I'm certainly not opposed to it. If you have a rare/strange race or concept that you want to play, then come up with a compelling reason and run it past me. If find some ridiculously good reason to play a Rootwalker half-dragon Mage, then I'll see what I can do to make it fit into the story.
There are still spots open so feel free to contact me through a PM if you are interested in getting more material or you would like some help to start creating a character.

I'm in, obviously!

I have the day off tomorrow, so I'll do some Witchfire Trilogy research and hit you back with a backstory tomorrow.

Don't know if you're still gonna run this, can you maybe give us some more information? I'm kinda at a loss for the setting, don't really know where to begin.

Still planning on running it, still trying to recruit another player or 2. I'm also scouring the Interwebs for good places that you could pick up some information on the setting. Work's a little crazy over the weekend, but I should have something more for everyone once the weekend's over.

Fantasy Craft Classes 101
Naturally, a large part of a d20 game is, "What class am I going to play?" With this in mind, I thought I'd put up a little information about what classes are available and an excerpt from the book on the topic of party roles.
Party Role: This suggests ways you can contribute to the success of your party. Classes can and often do fill more than one role. The five main party roles in Fantasy Craft are Backer (improves the entire party’s performance), Combatant (good at fighting), Specialist (master of one or more skills), Solver (excels at plot advancement and information gathering), and Talker (great with NPCs and social situations). A few classes are described as Wildcards — they have enough going on that they can fill in for two or more of the other roles depending on how their abilities develop.
Classes and their roles
Assassin - Talker/Combatant
Burglar - Specialist/Combatant
Captain - Backer/Combatant
Courtier - Talker/Backer
Explorer - Solver
Keeper - Specialist
Lancer - Combatant/Talker
Mage - Wildcard
Priest - Wildcard/Backer
Sage - Backer/Wildcard
Scout - Combatant/Solver
Soldier - Combatant
Expert Classes (prestige classes you can enter as early as your fifth level)
Alchemist - Backer
Beastmaster - Specialist
Edgemaster - Combatant/Backer
Paladin - Wildcard/Combatant
Rune Knight - Combatant
Swashbuckler - Talker/Combatant
Now, if you're wondering where some of the old 'classics' went, there are still options for your Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Rogue, etc., but it's in something called a Specialty. I'll not tell you more here, you're gonna have to ask and further subjugate yourself to me trying to hook you into my game.
I also have a Martial Artist and Fixer class from the company's flagship game, Spycraft if none of those tickle your fancy. Along with the Channeler and Seer, which are 2 specialist mages that specialize in Evocation and Divination type magics, respectively.

I am interested in giving it a shot, if you're looking for another player-- if not, that's okay, too.

Have 1 character ready to go, another one well on the way, another just about ready to go, and possibly a fourth if Korhal23 is still interested. If anyone is still interested in jumping on board, now's the time to do it.
08-28-2009, 08:27 AM
Yes... now. Now is the time!
The characters you can come up with are awesome. I had about 5 really good ideas before I settled on one and it is because the way the game is set up, when you are making your character, the different things that go into help build for more interesting personalities.
Thanks again, Foghorn, for running this! I cannot wait to get started. =] If only it were possible to wait faster. lol
08-30-2009, 10:03 AM
Okay Foggy, my character is sweet as, the way it is...Im just getting fidgety, cause Im quite excited and want a game soon.
08-31-2009, 08:29 AM
I'm ready to game, too =] PLEASE let the first game be a night and time that I am home!
Tonight [and every monday night] I have my live DND game that I play in. Saturday nights are my live campaign that I run.
...And so long as you and Marsham don't run games in the same hour... or if you do that you won't mind me being back and forth because I'd hate to skip out on either one of you.
Whoo! I can hardly wait. This is going to be so fun!
08-31-2009, 09:04 AM
I sooo wanna play this! I PMed you, but I thought I would post here too. I have Marshams game tomorrow night, like Kayeotic, but...I'm gonna call her KN...much easier to type. Anyway, yea I can bounce back and forth so long as they don't mind lol.
Just tell me what I need to do. I don't have the books for Fantasycraft though so I may need some character creation help.

An inside look in the mind of Emrys Thorngage:
The city I once resided in became too easy... too typical... too mundane... bigger cities mean more game... more people and more people to manipulate. A switch in the old routine makes things exciting again and keeps people from getting to know you... you stick around a small town long enough and you're bound to be caught... why make it easy?
So, what did I do about it? I decided to take a trip into a bigger city... one where no one knows your name unless you're a noble or a hero... neither of which I will ever be... oh, but I wouldn't mind being known-- but, I don't want to be known so easily... nor do I want to be known for being something as common as a hero or as lazy as a noble. Fame isn't something you should be born into or that can be won overnight because of one good deed... no, it should be acquired... over a great amount of time. That is my plan: stay hidden for a long time... years and years even and finally-- I get my recognition... people are in awe... "How did she do this for so long?" and "Wow... all these years and she was right under our noses?!" I like the shock factor-- makes me feel like I truly achieved something.
Well, there was one time I was caught... but there was only one time I got caught... back in the days of my petty thievery stage... I was caught, but in no way in trouble... there was kind of a mutual understanding between two misunderstood people there... he was an elf-- often unfancied by humans... except humans like me. I admired his craft and in a way, I think he admired my skill... at any rate-- I don't know him now but I wish I did. It was the only time I felt an honest connection with someone... although, I can fake one at any given time, and it gets me places.
You see, with my job, manipulation is key... desquise and seduction are musts... this is how I will make a name for myself... the next step is getting into the big city... reducing its population until it is significant enough of a reduction that people take notice... until they all walk around in fear... knowing I am the source of that fear is thrilling. Crime is a game, you see... and the reactions... Oh, the reactions! That is my prize for winning. It amuses me... delights me... I love having that power over people. Love is over-rated... I want to be feared.

Here is the character sheet. I don't know if I did it correctly, but I tried lol. I will post up my background tomorrow night.
Wait.....damn. It is too big to upload. -groans-
I am..ugh forget it. I will just retype EVERYTHING and post it up here tomorrow. I must go to sleep though.
Or...Foghorn, I will just email it to you tomorrow night then post the bakc stuff here :)
