Ok here's the deal. As much as I talk about Spycraft across these forums, it has come to my attention through PMs that MOST people here don't actually have any idea about the game itself. So, I've decided to adapt the game I'm running with my RL group into a Maptools game, and invite you folks to play in what basically amounts to a one-off :D I have handled character creation already (I have 12! characters for you to choose from), as well as gearing for the mission in question, so all you have to do is show up and play.

So here's what I need.
-Both a PM indicating interest, and a post on this thread. If enough people post I'll run the adventure multiple times so more people can learn the system I love so dear.
-Your availability. If I'm off work I'm good to play, pretty much always. So the more available you are (and the more your availability matches the others who show interest), the more likely you are to be selected.
-Your class selection.
Choose from:
Advocate- Power broker and master negotiator.
Explorer- World Traveler, at home anywhere and in any culture in the world. - Etarnon - Received Character
Faceman- Master of disguise and deception, undercover specialist.
Hacker- Computer savant, expert at computer warfare. - BladeMaster0182
Intruder- "Acquisitions Expert", master of breaking and entering, stealth.
Pointman- Team leader. Most versatile member of the team.
Scientist- Brilliant, master analyst and researcher. - Arkhemedes -Received Character
Scout- Master of terrain navigation, traps, and coordination of assault.
Sleuth- Master investigator, interrogator.
Snoop- Master of gather clues and sabotage through high tech gadgetry.
Soldier- Martial backbone of the team, strongest, toughest fighter on the team. - JCD - Received Character
Wheelman- One hand on the wheel, a gun in the other. Master of vehicles, also an immensely competent fighter. - ESoS
-Your character's full name, and his/her one word Codename. Example codenames are Bloodhound, Perseus, and Rook. All characters in this adventure will be American, and working for the American government.

When the team is assembled, I'll distribute character sheets, and give you time to build a character backstory around the sheet provided. All characters have been left gender neutral.

And that's basically it. So, who's interested?

I'd be interested as long as you don't mind taking on a complete rookie at both Spycraft AND the whole online maptools thing. Like I said before I've played Top Secret but had to rely heavily on the GM for info on things like weapons and computers. Not a military man or a computer geek.

What days and times are you planning on playing, Kor? My interest is piqued, mostly because you've talked up Spycraft so much, and because of their planned Fantasycraft game. Before I commit though, I'd like to know there's no schedule conflict. I know nothing about Spycraft of course, and I've never used Maptools (though I have used OpenRPG years ago when it was still WebRPG). Also, are you planning on using voice chat, like Ventrilo or Teamspeak?

Very interested in this game. Incoming PM with availability.

It's looking like it'll be a weeknight, based on the PMs i'm getting. Probably a Wednesday or Thursday, around 8pm my time (I'm central, so that's 6 pm to you west coasters, 9 pm to east coasters, and of course 7pm to mountain time). If necessary, I can split the game across multiple days. The mission I've chosen consists of three scenes, the standard mission length for Spycraft, designed to be completed in 4 to 6 hours.

And that's a more than fine that you guys don't know Spycraft. In fact, that's the whole point of this adventure. You needn't have any idea how to play Spycraft to play, because my intention is to teach and spread the word of my favorite game to as many as care to play. If you have a familiarity with d20, that's good, as this game is heavily influenced by 3.5 D&D. However, it is different enough that even the most diehard 3.5 fan will have much to learn. I'm willing to take the game as slow as necessary to teach the ins and outs of Spycraft, and the mission I'm using is one that has a little bit of everything. Combat is guaranteed, Roleplay is guaranteed, and a Dramatic Conflict or two (Spycraft's signature system) is guaranteed.

You don't have to be a military type person to play this game Ark, I promise. At least, no more than you have to know how to actually swordfight or spellcast to play D&D ;)

You also needn't know all the ins and outs of Maptools either. Simply download it, and if you have the time watch their tutorial videos so you aren't completely lost. All told, you should be ready to go in half an hour.

The game will probably be next week (thus giving me the time to map everything and try to write up some macros to help you all out).

I'd like to use voice chat, yes. So I'm going to look into setting up a server on my second computer. However, if a player has a server we can borrow, so much the better.

Sounds good so far. Wednesday or Thursday nights are fine for me though Thursday would be best. My next question is: Maptools and voice chat - where do I go to download/get these? (Told you I was a rookie). Fortunately with the voice chat I have a friend visiting from out of town this weekend who I'm pretty sure is familiar with this - so he should be able to help me there - and any equipment I need to buy, money is not a problem.

Maptools (http://www.rptools.net/index.php?page=tools) You don't need any of them except the actual MapTool. Everything else is GM only.

When I know what voice program to run, I'll tell you. I'm going to try to make Ventrilo work, as it is better, but Teamspeak is the backup.

If you're interested, I need your class selections. Only Harwel has locked in his class so far, as an Intruder. Just let me know the one that sounds the most interesting to you and it's yours.

I was thinking hacker or scientist, which ever might be more useful for the mission. But I'm assuming the other players would be more interested in the more action oriented characters, which is fine with me. On the other hand, if this is not the case, I'm willing to try anything to try create a team that covers the skills needed to do the mission.

I have not played but would be interested in learning if it was Thursday nights. I'm a quick study. The sleuth, snoop or scout look fun.

I sent a couple PMs regarding the game. A sleuth and his name for you per your original post intructions.

Your call, Ark. All the classes are useful, all the classes have their roles. All the classes are competent fighters, it's just that a few are more slanted in that direction than the others. So pick whatever you like, the classes all mesh well. In fact, the sheer balance of it all depite 14 base classes and nearly twice as many expert classes is one of the selling points of Spycraft, imo. Just go with what interests you and it'll all work out in the end.

Arkhemedes

Well, in that case, because I'm better with science than I am with computers I guess I'll go with scientist.

Alright folks, got us ONE spot left in the first run. Any of the unclaimed classes is fair game, and you do not need to know anything about how to play because, again, this is an instructional game! So who wants the spot?

Can I assume that I have spot in the game as a sleuth?

Nevermind. I just noticed that you have my name next to sleuth.

I know you mentioned we did not have to get anything but I found the link through the crafty website and purchased the pdf. Now a few hundred pages to browse.

Like I mentioned I have never played this nor have I used the maptools program.

I love learning new systems. Call it an obsession with studying things that won't do me any good. Times are good for me, if you've still got room I'd be happy to pick up the Soldier. Real name Gerald Espen, code name Bishop. I'm hoping I'll be able to Jason Bourne the shit out of someone at some point.

Okay so adding JCD in but taking out Harwel leaves one spot still. Open to any takers.

Hi, I've got spycraft 2.0.

My understanding is that this is a one-shot spread over multiple sessions?
Can we get an idea of level?

I can do thursday nights. My wednesdays are taken.

it's all pre-gens yes? Does maptool have a xml char sheet function or will you use an outside sheet site like tangled trees? (Or whatever their name is?)

Yes it's all pregens. Maptools is CAPABLE of an embedded character sheet, I just have to code it myself. I'm working on it. If I can't get the functionality where I want it, I'll just send them to you PM style, probably. You should all be receiving your characters through PMs shortly here so you can look over them and build a story around them. Note though, that you cannot change ANYTHING on the sheet, your character will be played as issued. Only the character's name and gender and backstory are up to you, but bear in mind that all characters are working for the US government in "The Agency," a fictional, Top Secret wing of the US intelligence gathering operation.

Great, I have you down as the first alternate. What that means is if someone doesn't show up, you're in. Otherwise, I'll give you first priority in the second group I run, if enough interest for a second group arises. Sound fair? That said, you're welcome to sit in on the first run and get a feel for the game too, in case a second group never forms. If you do that though, and one forms, I'll change the mission for the second group (I have about a dozen on hand, so no big deal)

Hey, that looks kinda cool...first time here, so I can't say I've heard you talk so much about it, but I'm definitely interested. Too bad the first group is full already, but I'd like to join a second if you're up to it, or be an alternate.

korhal23

The main reason I wanted PM's was because it would send an email to my phone at work, so I'd know to get to a computer and respond. You're in, you're good.

Ok folks, I'm getting around to passing out character sheets. It's a long and involved process for me to transfer the sheets I have into something readable through PMs, so bear with me.... I can't spend too long at a time on them because it is a tad of a headache. I've sent two out for group one, I'll probably do another one tonight and send the other two tomorrow.

Got my character. I'll work on it this weekend. Questions about the backgrounds: I'm assuming the campaign takes place right now in '09. When I played Top Secret before our backgrounds looked more like resumes. Will that suffice for this or do we need to spend more time on things like what motivates us, our likes and dislikes, any personal tragedies that have happened to us,etc.?

korhal23
07-03-2009, 02:18 PM
Actually, make your background like a resume. Things like personal demons and tragedies, and things that your character likes are game mechanics, Subplots and Interests respectively. Interests you'll find on your character sheet, Subplots I'm leaving out for this game. Just have a general idea of who your character is (mostly based off the character sheet), a personality, maybe where he or she comes from, what motivates him or her. Make it interesting enough that you'll have fun playing him/her, but simple enough for what basically amounts to a Spycraft Dungeon Delve. If you want to run it by me, feel free.

korhal23
07-05-2009, 10:25 AM
Alright sorry fellas, forgot about the holiday so I didn't have a chance to do what I was planning. I'm going to try to send the rest of the sheets out today. If you don't get it, expect it tomorrow.

Well, it has come to my attention that Baldwin isn't going to be able to make the game this Thursday. That said, rather than him miss out, I'm going to push the game back a week. This doubles to give me more time to get the functionality of MapTool where I want it. Hope that's not a problem for anyone.

Arkhemedes
07-06-2009, 04:49 PM

So I'm assuming you'll let us know more on the specifics when we actually go to connect, eh? And just for clarification, I can still watch the first group, to get a feel for the game and whatnot, right? And one last question: we've got the second group, but no time set up to start playing, so are we just waiting for the first group to conclude, or running them in parallel, or what?

Just thought I'd be inquisitive

korhal23
07-08-2009, 03:42 PM
Fair enough. Yeah, I'll let you all know when I know more specifics. Server info and whatnot will go up probably the day before. Yes, anyone may log in to watch whether they're in group 2 or not. If a significant amount of group 2 shows up I'll change the mission for them though, so they don't have too much OOC knowledge of the mission. Group 2 is waiting on Group 1 to conclude, then I'll start focusing on them.

Azalit
07-08-2009, 11:25 PM
Ah, awesome. I probably won't sit in the first session, but I do look forward to watching...and then, of course, playing :p

Cool. I'm excited.

I wish I had picked up on this thread a week ago or so. Sorry I missed it. I recently got Spycraft 2.0 and I've been reading and planning a campaign. Three problems though, 1-I've never actually played it, 2-I don't have a group so I thought to play online and I've never played online before, and 3-I haven't really rpg'd as player or dm in years.

So I'd like to catch the next round of these if you are going to do this again.
