This thread is like all of those classic Online RPG's out there. Everytime someone levels they say, "DING" and everyone throws out congrats. So I am leveling with this thread once I click submit......DING!!!

A useful reason for this thread also is have any of you played an online RPG? What was it and how far did you get? I DINGED all the way up to level 32 in Everquest as an Iksar Necromanser before I realized that I didn't even like playing it!

In tribute to Thoth....Where ding you???

Emm, emm ... ooooh, those games.

EverQuest, right on up to 70 (had to look that up, heh), Warcraft to 80.

Best bard implementation, evar, EQ, despite the devs not really knowing what to do with us ;) To this day, Seiya Starsong inspires all my pen-and-paper bards and other musically-inclined characters ('specially her spiritual successor, Sera Stormsong).

Free Realms has piqued my interests in MMOs again; somehow the SOE folks made a danged fun casual game.

For whatever reason (probably no good one) that phrase has always enraged me. I was still playing EQ when it started being used, and it probably annoyed me because the level-up sound didn't freaking sound anything like "ding" to me. I remember asking in channel "What the heck does 'ding' mean? Why is everyone saying that when they level?"

Heh, can't even discuss it without getting agitated. I'll just be over in the corner muttering =)

Interesting - someone compiled a ton of level-up sounds from various games. http://www.dorkclub.com/ding/

I've only dinged to low levels with video games before going A.D.D. i did, however ding my way to killing the dragon in DragonSlayer. Good ole Dirk got the dame.

Two negative dings recently here on PnPG- I dinged twice to 22 with the denial of service party last month, but those levels seem to have worn off.

I play WoW off and on- currently off. Level 64 or so Mage sitting in Hellfire being bored with finishing up the last of the quests. I may sign back in with the end of camping season in October. My gf was playing it last night- was slightly tempted to jump on and play, but went back to my book instead.

I never got past like 28 in Everquest- just too repetitive and intolerant of mistakes. When one death erased as much XP as I could make in a session, it was time to hang up my scimitar.

Talmek

Ding!

WoW - A level 70 Undead Warlock named, you guessed it, Talmek
LotRO- A level 60 Elf Minstrel named Alduran Calenrath

After levelling my warlock to the cap, I raided until I was literally sick from it (It was an addiction, I should show some restraint, blah blah blah). After making it through Black Temple for the third time, I had had enough. I really wasn't a fan of PvP, so I donated my character to my best friend who still plays to this day.

Pretty much the same story with my minstrel. After hitting the cap, there just wasn't enough to do in order to keep me interested. I was on a role-playing server (Landroval, for those who played) but the lack of organization for events just got the best of me and I walked away.

It was fun while it lasted, but I'm glad it's over now.

Oh yea I forgot to say the name of my Iksar Necromancer from EQ....CatabolicAvatar
Mead I sort of hated the ding concept myself, but it was a love/hate. Hated it all the time except when I leveled lol. My characters name drew a ton of attention and was partly the reason I was invited into a guild. In about 1 month of being in the guild I was being offered an officer position and was engaged to be married to another guild member(within the game). I was bringing down giants solo when I quit. I had all my spells bought and stored in the bank all the way up to level 45 I believe, and I had a toooooon of money. My friend was a level 54 bard, so he would help me level and dumped plat off on me all the time cause he had more then he could ever spend. I was really good at it, and I almost never did group battles. My character was an Iksar Necromancer it would be out of character to do anything but work solo.

Sascha
05-19-2009, 03:51 PM
EQ's mechanics were love/hate, really; when the original devs left, they took a lot of their design goals with them and I say it made the game better. Verant was rather fond of the stick, with little love for the carrot, heh.

Mead

Think I got up to 28 in EQ with a Human Monk, Mead Mornagh. Was on Karana, member of The Haven.

Got a 50-something Night Elf Priest in Warcraft, haven't played that since around the time Burning Crusade came out.

The MMO plain is littered with burned out avatars of myself, most around mid-level.

Stupidly rare spawns and even rarer drops, how both need to be purged from game design. With fire. From orbit, if necessary. Sadly, this part of EQ never went away, as long as I played :\ (The halfling mask was sooooooo worth it though, just to see the reactions from halfling guildmates, tee hee ^_^)

WoW was better, in the warlock/paladin mount quests ... well, the Horde paladin mount quest, anyway (never did finish the lock's; she got shelved when the Horde got elves and I think she still resents it :P).

I mostly play Runescape (free for the most part, but as a paying member you get access to all the features of the game). Its all skill-based (including combat: attack, strength, defend, hitpoints, ranged, magic, and prayer); the more you perform a skill (mining, smithing, attacking, etc.), the more it goes up and the more stuff you have available. Earlier tonight I dinged my mining level (level 66 mining).

I've been looking at everyone's titles as I read stuff, never occurred to me to compare it to their levels to find out the ranges. I guess next I'll need to figure out how to get it to stop saying "Lurker" under my name.

Soft Serve

Quasi-Diety :: 28-30
Immortal (?) :: 25-27
Epic :: 21-24
Legendary :: 20
Champion :: 15-19
Hero :: 10-14
Adventurer :: 5-9
Neophyte :: 1-4
(Your first month you will also have a "Lurker" tag.)

Nobody is in the ranks 25-27 so I'm not 100% thats when Immortal rank starts and ends.

Arch Lich Thoth-Amon
06-29-2009, 02:43 PM

We lovingly refer to it as liquid speed. It's full of sugar and caffeine, and it WILL give you heart palpitations if you drink too much. So kiddies, or anyone with a heart condition, or over 30 years of age, be wise and drink it in moderation. http://www.penandpapergames.com/forums/images/icons/icon13.gif

The current topic was about drinking large quantities of Code Red, or something similar, not medical conditions, so i am sure he was referring to the mass quantities he was drinking, not your friend getting diabetes. That's how i took it, for i too drank large quantities when i was younger. It's funny so many of us were guilty of such a thing. Code Red is just sooo addictively good. :biggrin:

This is cool, a 2010 version. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0423512/

FYI: 2010 will slow my activity down to a snails crawl. Love, moving, and marriage will change my life considerably--for the better. She was my high school sweetheart, 27+ years ago. I tell her every day that i feel like i won the lottery. I remember walking back to class in 9th grade after seeing her for some smooches, and hearing this voice say: you're going to marry this girl one day.

Strange thing is, i was all alone in the hallway, i looked around, and no one was there. I didn't even know what love was. Yeah, it was propitious, no question. The voice was definitely real. Thought I'd share the first part of a really very cool love story. The rest of the story gets even stranger, and more incredible, still.

thats called a "Contingency Plan"

It's good to have those for...

Zombies, Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Crazy People, Plane Wrecks, Raptor Attacks, Ex-Girlfriends, Armadillo rebellions, The (re-)Rise of the south, When you run out of toilet paper, When all Hell (literally) breaks loose, When your house catches fire, When your insurance company sues you for insurance fraud when they learn you caught your house on fire, and What to do with your life now that your contingency plans are all planned out and you'l never have to worry about anything again.

Alright then wear a Hair-met.

So how big can threads get before the person that started it stops getting XP? I actually didn't know you got XP for replies in threads, let alone that there was a limit.

Also does this DM offer role playing XP?

Panthro82

well they USED to give out EXP to the creator for replies to their threads, but that was done away with.

You know Q-man, I'm glad you asked that question. Maybe someone out there can actually explain it, because I'm sure not clear on it. I've heard talk that the people who start threads no longer get experience whenever someones replies to it. But I'm pretty darn sure I have, and recently. That's not really why I start threads though - so it's not a big concern. I'm guessing, like you, there must be a cutoff point or something. Unfortunately, I don't think the DM gives at rat's patootty about role playing however.

(Hmm...it figures there would be a couple of answers while I wrote this.:rolleyes:)

Yeah, and I do recall seeing something from him on it. Then where do these mysterious exp points come from that seem to creep in over night? I've actually written down all the numbers including friends, votes, etc. before going to bed and the next morning they're different. Could it be the exp fairy paying me a visit? :confused:

How are blogs hard to maintain? You just throw some stuff up there and assume people read it. Its got a comment thread attached so if people want to participate they can, just seems that people are less likely to respond to blogs than threads.

The blog here I've been using to store notes for myself. A campaign log, and tricks to remember for the virtual table tops. Which reminds me, I need to add a MapTools category for when I get a campaign going in there...
