This will likely be a Play by Post game here on this forum

Setting - Greypeaks in the North (Forgotten Realms)

Books you should understand or have knowledge of - Demihuman Deities, Dwarves Deep, The North, anything else you believe would be pertinent to your character.

Available Races - Mountain Dwarf and Duergar

Allowed Classes - Fighter, Thief, Priest(only allowing specialty priests), Chanter (Bard), Psionocist. I will allow multi-classing as per the 2nd edition source material. Thief, Chanter, and Psionocist all have either complex rules or are very different inside of dwarven society. If you are unaware of exactly how they differ, then I would be happy to explain. I expect you to understand them well before trying to pitch the character idea.

Alignments - No restrictions, but Chaotic will be looked at very closely. Dwarven societies in general are extremely lawful, so one would expect to find this amongst the party members. I will tolerate no silliness and expect a very well written explanation should you persue an evil alignment.

Attributes - Basic 6, rolled 4D6 minus lowest. (You can assign them however you wish, just try and be honest, only the game suffers if you cheat. Just post the scores when you post your sheet)

Equipment - Will be afforded by your societal position and families wealth.

Basics - This will be a roleplay heavy campaign. It will require an extensive background and I expect quality posts. Everyone involved will be involved in an epic all dwarf campaign, adding to its complexity and evolving the story. I posted some notations in the fantasy section here (http://www.penandpapergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9933). I expect a good understanding and a character that has lived amongst this stead for quite some time.

A far as the campaign goes, I would start all the players at first level and likely young as far as dwarves go. They would all likely have jobs within the stead and be called together or volunteered by their thanes should something arise. The game would center around the Stead itself at first, but as they progressed they would likely be called to act as emissaries to foreign lands, possibly even questing for nearby kingdoms that have been lost. It really depends on the players, I tailor my game to my players (I have been DM'ing for 20 yrs.) so I know the drill and how to develop the stories for the players. I like epic sorts of games that one can really sink their teeth into and feel proud of their character when it finally draws to a close.

This is just to determine any interest and start the ball rolling, hopefully the gods that be, will grant me a spot here to run said game. I will be contacting them within the next few weeks and asking. Should it all go as I plan I will begin taking submissions about that time and we will begin the arduous task of character building (Its fun, really) and would be looking to start the game within some time after that.

If this type of chronicle sounds like what you might be interested in just reply and show your support. (It might even convince the gods that the game needs to be here)

I appreciate your time and patience in reading this all, I know its a bit long and complex, but dwarves are never simple people.

Proficiencies - We will be using the weapon and non weapon proficiencies found throughout the 2nd edition material. Make certain and look over guilds and how they apply to your non weapon prof.

Languages - We will be using the Realms languages from 2nd edition. Some of note...

Common - Rare inside the stead, still sounds a bit archaic if spoken outside unless you are a recent immigrant from Adbar.

Dethek - (modern Dwarven) Very common and the normal tongue of the stead.

Auld Dethek - (Ancient Dwarven) Although based in the same tongue as Dethek, this is a very archaic form with many differing variations throughout the North. Not common outside of the priesthoods of Moradin and Dumathoin.

Auld Wyrmish - (Draconic written tongue) - Can occasionally be found within the stead, mostly found in families that claim a dragon slaying in their histories.

Undercommen - Duergar and closely allied Mountain Dwarf clans would be the only that might utilize the tongue still, held in the same regard as Common. The dialect is quite noticeable and archaic.

Monstrous tongues - a bit less noticeable due to the high variations already apparent in the tongues, Orcish, Goblin, Troglodyte, Kobold, Gnollish, Flind.

Giantish Tongues - Easily the most common monstrous tongues within the stead, they have some early connection to dethek. Each strain has certain commonalities, though each subrace has its own flavor and mannerisms.

Your beginning Languages - You receive your 'native' tongue for free (i.e.Dwarvish) and one more, either the written form if you wish or another tongue. You also receive the amount dictated for Int. score, but may use them as Non weapon prof. as well.

Secondary Skills - can be used, but I prefer to only use them as flavor. Should you decide upon them please make certain your NWP's agree with it.

Encumbrance - We will be using it if it appears the party is becoming a slow moving Wal-Mart.

Monetary Wealth - Rare inside the stead and its use is limited to the stead itself, most players trade goods or services inside the stead.

Preist spells - Dictated by the Demihuman Deities Rules - when in doubt please ask.

Thief abilities - as per Players Handbook and Thief's Handbook. Dwarven items shall be considered depending upon your rank within the various guilds that would have trained you.

Fighters - Most are within the Militia (Outpost duty or likely Illethkeep or Mining guilds (guarding the lower levels)

Chanter - Noble bloodlines only, the wealthiest of the wealthy. Most Steads have 1-2 and only teach their own offspring.

psionics - rare indeed even amongst the duergar, a few have managed to hone enough skill to have progressed in possibly one or two disciplines. Should you venture beyond those two though, you will need to find another instructor. (i.e. other duergar, Illithids, possibly odd humans from the great beyond Spelljammer) We will be using the system presented in The Will and the Way and Skills and Powers. I do have the handbook so might be swayed if you are familiar enough with that system. I just feel the other is a bit more easily understood and utilized.

Should you have any further questions feel free to ask away, I know I might have overlooked something or have simply not been completely clear. I look forward to seeing some character concepts and then we can begin hammering out the character histories and stats.

For any further information upon the Chanter class please feel free to ask, this is a type of Bard found amongst the dwarves and is a conglomeration of cannon material and my own invention. They operate much differently then any bard one might encounter.

Awaiting sheets and ideas, please feel free, just post a few up and we'll hammer something together, this game will be much more based on role-play then dice rolls.

Some things to consider when creating a characters background.

Clans known to be residing in Uerythtar

Native : Blackalbryn (Royal line of kings), Tethgard, Thundarden, Shieldstar, Uerthshield, Rivenhelm, Arnskull, Battlehammer, Blackbanner, Blackhammer, Bucklebar, Eaglecleft, Horn, Jundeth, Narlagh, Orothiar, Quarrymaster, Rockfist, Stoneshoulder, Trueforger, Watchever, Worldthrone, Oakenshield, Tigereye, Erizak, Verbain, Vaxgur, Vyrn, Hammerfall, AtticaHammer

Perhaps read over the faiths of the dwarves and choose a diety you favor. Here is a link to a great site. (http://www.nj-pbem.com/data/Gods/dwarvengods/DwarvenGods.htm)

Full Name/History/Background:

Name – Thon Quarrymaster, Son of Askur, Blood of Ruthgar Grandmason of Illethkeep, Draconom and member of the Blood of Moradin.

Too young to have taken part in the Deep war with the traitorous Derro, Thon has tried to replace his older brother that fell defending the stead. He often feels he is a disappointment to his father, whom cared for his first son deeply. He has followed his familial profession and has joined in the Drakonom to fulfill his father’s desire for a son he could be proud of. He has an abrasive personality that some might refer to as dry, but those that know him well think highly of him. He is far removed from his Thane and it is unlikely Delkral even is aware of him. He spends a great amount of time in Illethkeep and is always the first to volunteer on any mission that might seem dangerous, in an attempt to please his family. He rarely overindulges in vices feeling it brings dishonor to his clan and family.

Lineage (3 generations)

1. Ruthgar Quarrymaster wed to Jana (pronounced E-yana) father of 4
(Grandfather and Grandmother – Father’s Side)

2. -Aya (Aunt) wed to Bofvar Erizak, 3 children
[-Delthur Erizak (cousin-male) Mule Skinner]
[-Dli Erizak (cousin-female) unwed]
[-Athra Erizak (cousin-female) unwed]
-Orim (Uncle) (Dead, never spoken of)
-Gima (Aunt) wed to Bjorn Steonsheild (Adbarran) no children
- Askur wed to Rana father of 6 (Father and Mother) (Rana a single child from a very poor branch. She rarely ever speaks of her life prior to wedding Askur)

3. - Ruthgar II (brother), Killed in the Deep War defending Uerythtar
- Thon (Character) 2nd Son
- Vonola (Sister) Still within the clan’s home.
- Lutha (Sister) Still within the clan’s home.
- Uethym (Brother) Very young
- Vornal (Brother) Just born

(This is an example of what I would like to see, but if you are unfamiliar with anything or need any assistance please ask and I would be happy to help.)

Full Name/History/Background

Name – Ertryd Uerthshield, Gradual of Thralsia, Blood of Kanik, Chanter of the the Thanes.

Born to an absent minded father and a cold, distant mother, Ertryd spent her childhood in the court of the Thanes. She learned the ways of politics and wealth at a young age. She found herself spending most of her time with her grandmother and her older brother. Her grandmother taught her the ways of the court and forced her father’s hand in allowing her to be apprenticed as a Chanter. She had a wonderful voice and was the power behind Ertryd’s grandfather and father. She died when Ertryd was in her twenties, but Ertryd still remembers her fondly now. After her grandmother’s death, Ertryd threw herself into her studies and practiced harder than ever. She was intent on becoming the Chanter and politician that her grandmother saw in her. Her total devotion to her studies meant that she had few friends in childhood and young adulthood, but she did not feel any loss from it and still had the company of her brother and the comfort she took in the challenges of court life. Among the members of court, Ertryd’s looks are often compared to those of her grandmother, an observation she takes as the highest compliment.

Not far into her studies, Ertryd realized that her father and brother were not very accomplished Chanters. Her brother tries diligently, but he lacks the ability to truly master the skills of a Chanter. He believes that Ertryd is destined for greater things, however, and this encouragement gives her initiative and forethought to look beyond the normal and mundane. She sees herself as a legendary Chanter in the making, and she hopes to create a lasting legacy among her people, and maybe beyond.

Ertryd has heard the tales of old told at court and hungers for more. She seeks every opportunity to hear a story of the past, or of the world outside. She wants to travel, seek out long lost civilizations, meet races she has only heard of. She has a desire to know that is inevitably pulling her away from court and into the wider world.

Ertryd is very proud, bordering on haughty due to her station and her unshakable belief in her abilities. She believes that all dwarves must have dignity, and she looks askance at those who frequently lack composure or make fools of themselves. She will never let her pride get in the way of gaining knowledge however. She has a slight tendency towards greed, mainly because she is used to fine things. Greed doesn’t get in the way of more important things like reputation or health, but she may be tempted to explore a ruin rumored to be filled with treasure. She loves intelligent conversation, though a life at court has perfected her ability to make small talk. She loves to show off her abilities and perform, though she has learned that her station dictates that she not perform in just any setting. She is good at heart, and seeks knowledge and skill out of a desire to better her clan, not just for the purpose of her reputation. She is slightly naïve from a sheltered life and sometimes has a hard time understanding and empathizing with nondwarves, but she is still eager to meet and learn from them. She is quick and eager to learn. Her years of relative solitude have instilled in her a tendency towards contemplativeness, and she is always looking toward self-betterment. However, she is able to drop her contemplations and jump into action at a moment’s notice. Ertryd has a jovial nature that is usually hidden under the solemnity of etiquette, but may come out in unguarded moments. She probably won’t acknowledge it, though, as she is quick to deny any behavior or emotion she may think is unseemly. Her actions are very frequently weighed in the frame of what her grandmother would do or expect. She tries to be as much like her grandmother as possible, and has yet to grow into her own person. She often fails to realize, though, that her grandmother was not all pomp and circumstance outside of court life. It may be that some time away from the dwarven court is just what she needs.

Lineage

1. Ovar the Fourth wed to Thralsia - Thralsia was quite dotted upon by her own father Kanik and has always been remembered quite fondly after her death quite some time ago. She outlived your grandfather, whom seemed to be very similar to your father in many respects.
(Grandfather and Grandmother – Father’s Side)

2. -Ovar the Fifth wed to Reihild Rivenhelm (Mother and Father)
Ovar was an only child and your mother's marriage was an arrangement for clan unities. The arrangement was very cold and indifferent, much akin to arranged noble weddings long ago. Very little of your mother's relations are known, perhaps due to your childhood at court.

3. - Dorn (brother), currently an apprentice chanter as well. He holds senoirity over you, but he has admitted you are much more talented.
- Ertryd (Character) 1st Daul

Physical Description

Ertryd is 3’8” and 131 lbs. She is a little on the short side for a dwarf, and has only a little bit of extra weight from the time she spends sitting in court. She has straight light brown hair with subtle red highlights that falls to the middle of her back and a beard reaching midway down her chest. Her eyes are ale-colored and her skin is pale, as she has spent very little time out of doors. She has a broad, strong facial structure, with a wide nose, high cheek bones, and a strong mouth and jaw. She keeps her beard braided, perfumed, and decorated with bloodstones and a gold-and-bloodstone clasp. She wears sturdy leather boots, sturdy leather leggings, a linen tunic, a leather vest, and a deep red cloak that matches her tunic. Her tunic is embroidered around the hem and cuffs with strong lines forming a simple pattern. Her clothing is otherwise built to withstand the wear and tear of living underground. Her equipment is of a sturdy, well-proportioned design, as she is very particular about having high quality equipment.

mnemenoi had mentioned that we might have a chanter coming in, I am thrilled to see that you decided to give this a go. I think he should be back from his vacation by Wednesday at the latest.

The party is really shaping up and it looks like we have already managed to assemble the classic party (albeit with a Dwarven bent): a Fighter, a Thief, a Priest, and a Mage! I look forward to playing with all three of you.

Baldric with enameled pin befitting my rank and membership into the Drakonom

Name - Dalana Jundeth

History - I was born to a long and prestigious line of brewers. Throughout my childhood my mother went against the normal matronly role and began cutting gems, perhaps because of her very independent nature. It would appear that I am certainly cut from the same cloth. From an early age warfare and military things attracted my eye. Being quite more comfortable then even some of the males in my clan, my clear vision and expert aim quickly gained me note and attention. Though uncommon my parents were able to apprentice me in the Drakonom. There my marksmanship far excelled me past the casual training. I was chosen as the best in my class and was sent to receive sharpshooter instruction from Whurar Sundarr, a recent and credited warrior from Adbar. Under his tutelage I excelled, he lacked some of the sexist notions that were found in the native Uerythtaren ranks. From him I learned tales of the outside world, a land of adventure and mystery. To this day we are both still quite close, seeing him often. I yearn for the day to explore and experience the lands and people he has told me stories of. In this regard I volunteer for any duties that might take me out of the stead. My family is both supportive and understanding about my individuality, but also preoccupied with their own endeavors.

Lineage -
Barel the Stout and Doltia Jundeth - (Grandparents) renowned brewers in Uerythar. Doltaile is an ale that he brewed in honor of his wife, it is still served in the steads many bars.

Vonrak Jundeth (Uncle) - Brewer
Bgur and Urani Jundeth (Uncle and Aunt) - Brewer and Weaver
Dolthen and Nalif (Parents) - Your father is a another renowned brewer in the stead, continueing along his families tradition. Your mother is an accomplished gem cutter, which is certainly odd given the normal role in their society.

Dalana Jundeth (Character) - 1st daul
Harida Jundeth - (Sister) Bar waitress and aspiring devotee of Sharidlar (2nd daul)
Delim Jundeth - Apprenticed Brewer to your father (1st son)

Name – Ferous Goldvein

History –Growing up in a family of miners can get, well boring. I never really took to the trade, though my father and his father, and his father all have done it. I look at their lives and see that after all of that, we are still lower class manual laborers who on a good day, eat a hot meal and see some sort of change in the dreariness that is the deep mines. The day I approached my father to tell him of my unhappiness was my twentieth birthday. We sat at the table, looking at each other with a stare that was so tired and devoid of energy that at times we could be mistaken for dead. I just took a deep breath and told him that my life was meant for something else, I crave the adventure and glory of military life. I told him that I want to better our position by gaining glory in battle. One of the few times I ever saw my father smile was then. He looked to me, and gave a great toothy grin. I honestly thought the next instant would be my picking up my teeth off of the floor. Instead, he stood and hugged me. Tears rolled down his face, smearing the dirt and grime that had been caked there from the days work. I was so taken a back, I actually let out a slight yell, thinking I was sure to be attacked. Instead, he was proud of me, and my decision, and wished me all the luck that he could. My mother stood silent, she too had a tear running down her face. She walked to the stone jar hidden in the wall and gave me the gold that was hidden there. I arose immediately, took the money, hugged my parents, and walked out to enlist in the militia.
My training was hard and arduous, I wasn’t as prepared as the others, as they came from military families and already had instruction. Though, in the end, I actually did quite well, learning to use the hand axe and dagger. I learned to trust my shield and my swinging hand, to breath during strokes, and to always strike true.
As I gained more experience from training, I was put into a small unit that accompanied the miners into the deep tunnels for protection. This I have taken to, and constantly look for chances to both further myself and live the adventure I have always craved.
While never truly meeting Thane Sven Shieldstar the Robust, I saw him once when he came to a mine site that I was guarding. He walked by me, I saluted, and he said to keep up the good work. I will some day reach the level where he will say “Where is Ferous! I need him as only he can help me!” I look to him and see a Dwarf that made himself out of his own hands, axe in one and shield in the other. So then, I look forward to my first combat and my first chance to prove myself, as it will only be the beginning.

Lineage -
Sact and Freida Goldvein - (Grandparents) Began mining in hopes of earning a living in the most noble of Dwarven occupations.
Sactim and Fabra (Parents) – Sactim married Fabra from a mining family, who all died from a shaft collapse save her. They serve Thane Sven faithfully, and live vicariously through Ferous.

Full Name/History/Background

Name – Barur Erizak Gilded Merchant and Alloyn of Vergadain

History -
Baruk was raised in the large family of the Erizak clan and from even an early age bonded quickly with his brother Yurdin. He would accompany his parents to visit with him throughout his time in Illethkeep. He loved the time he spent there and would often go by himself as soon as he was old enough. His brother would chastise him, but always loved seeing him. He was quickly adopted by Yurdin's fellows as somewhat of a fixture and they all would look after the young and headstrong dwarf when he would visit. It was during his many visits that he happened upon what appeared to be an abandoned temple that sat quiet across from the active temple of Clangeddin.fancying himself as an explorer of a long forgotten tomb, he entered and started to wander about. Orin Garrick, a young acolyte at the time, found him wandering and was quickly set upon by the scared youth. Receiving a serious blow to his knee, he finally was able to calm him enough to speak. He told him of Vergadain and what he meant in the greater world. he spoke of kingdoms filled with elves and humans, of far distant lands and places. The young dwarf was enthralled and soon would spend scant time at home. He had yet to reach the age of his apprenticeship, but he was so independent he could never be contained again. When his father spoke of brokering a contract with some of the various guilds, Barur asked that he speak with Tirmaar his father agreed, but secretly laughed. To gain an apprenticeship amongst the priesthoods required much more money then he could ever afford and lacking any ties to their clan had little hope of ever brokering such a contract.
When his father returned he smiled weakly and said that he was accepted as an apprentice, though he never spoke about how it had been managed. He spent the next thirty years reading, learning strange and foreign tongues. He learned of maps, trade agreements, and of the gilded merchant and his purpose amongst the chosen people. His proximity to his brother was a relief and although he only occasionally could visit his family he met his brother quite regularly.

He only has recently neared completion of his schooling and even he knows he might spend his entire life studying and still be more to learn. He had heard Orin mention that some great issue was at stake in a recent Council of Thanes meeting, but he would not divulge anything more. It was early one morning when a young acolyte of Dumathoin entered the temple and told him his presence was requested by Orin Garrick and that he was requested to gather what maps he might locate of Loudwater and its environs in relation to Uerythtar. He immediately set out for his brother's friends as many were from Adbar and a few might have kept a map from their journey's. Any that would have been found in the stead would be far too outdated to be of any relevance.

He knew what dwarves might have had something that he sought, so he was able to be more efficient then a blind search. After a few minutes he had found three such maps that their owners had kept. They were happy just giving him them, but his own faith looked down upon swindling dwarves out of goods even if they were your friends. He paid them quite well, which the Adbarrans had tried to deny. One had even become upset about him offering any amount. He just smiled and stuffed the valuables into his gear when he was not looking. Having acquired his needs he immediately ran to the temple of Dumathoin and his high priest that was obviously awaiting him. He only hoped he would not get a lecture over dawdling.... (See thread To Seek a Thane)

Lineage

1. Glorir the spider wed to Belora – Your grandfather had found his calling in doing very fine ceiling work while being supported high in the cavern. He was often thought to be mad, spending entire days suspended over various chambers doing fine detail work with stones. He had many offspring and his fortune led to a gift from his Thane, Erizak Hall, which even to this day stands out amongst the lesser clans as a symbol of what just one man can achieve. (Grandfather and Grandmother – Father’s Side)

2. – Gimir wed to Bofbella - Wed at an early age, Gimir was a rising mason and stonecutter. He quickly rose to some prominence within their guild and soon had quite some demand for his work and expertise. Although he was quite gifted in his arts he spent most of his time at home assisting his wife who had provided him with many children. They are quite loving parents, but with so many children they are pressed in all things and although he was successful, the cost of apprenticeships alone has nearly bankrupted them many times over. (Father and Mother)

3. – Yurdin (Brother) – Stationed in Illethkeep, very close
– Glorir (Brother) - Stonemason
- Werserd (Sister) – wedded to Nalgan
- Bolbela (Sister) – Parents are choosing a husband
- Ovthen (Brother) – Just finished his apprenticeship with the stonemasons
- Barur ( The Character)
- Azina (Sister) – Very young still
- Belora (Sister) – Recently born
